Civil takeoff software for sitework contractors
CivilTakeoff is easy-to-use civil takeoff software that measures areas and calculates quantities quickly, all from your browser. Measure areas, lengths, and counts, organize quantities by pay item, and export to Excel. No plans? No problem. Use scaled satellite imagery to do your takeoff, for free.

A takeoff, start to finish
- 01
Upload the plan PDFs. CivilTakeoff detects sheet names and scale. Confirm each sheet's scale against a known dimension.
- 02
Select a shaded region on a supported vector PDF to create an area measurement. Adjust the boundary and cutouts to match the work.
- 03
Measure the remaining areas and lengths, and count structures or fixtures. Name each condition (a measurement group) by scope.
- 04
Assign pay items and units. Convert square feet to square yards, or enter depth and density to calculate volume and material weight. Keep Base Bid and Alternates separate.
- 05
Compare addenda with the sheet overlay. Copy takeoff to a replacement sheet and adjust measurements to match the revised design.
- 06
Export pay-item totals to Excel and print a marked-up set with the layers your team needs.
What it does
Automatic area pickup
CivilTakeoff extracts vector geometry from plan PDFs. Select a supported shaded region to create an editable area measurement.
PDF measurement tools
Areas, lengths, and counts with vertex-level editing. Scale reads from the title block and waits for confirmation. Search across the plan set to find sheet notes and references.
Satellite takeoff
CivilTakeoff pulls georeferenced aerial imagery at a confirmed scale. Measure visible pavement and clearing limits for preliminary quantities when plan sheets are not available.
Quantities by pay item
Assign your pay-item codes, descriptions, and units to measurements. Quantities total across sheets and export as XLSX for your estimate.
With Pro estimator seats, team members can measure and edit the same project. Free viewer seats let others review sheets and quantities. How collaboration works
Before you measure
File geometry determines how you measure; depth and density determine conversions.
- Depth and density are your inputs. Use the project details and material data when converting measured areas into volumes or tons.
- No surface-based cut and fill. Use an earthwork tool for volumes between existing and proposed surfaces.
- No automatic pickup on scanned sheets. Automatic area pickup requires supported vector geometry. Calibrate scanned sheets and measure them manually.

Frequently asked questions
- Is the free tier a trial?
- No. Free includes 10 projects, 5 GB of plan storage, and 1 estimator seat. Measurement tools and XLSX export are included. No credit card required and no expiration.
- Does it run on a Mac?
- Yes. CivilTakeoff runs in a web browser on Mac and Windows. Sign in to the same account to access your projects from either computer.
- Does automatic area pickup work on any PDF?
- Automatic area pickup uses geometry in supported vector PDFs. Scanned sheets can be calibrated and measured manually.
- Can I export quantities to a spreadsheet?
- Yes. Export quantities as XLSX, organized by pay item with Base Bid and Alternates separate.
- Does it do earthwork cut and fill?
- No. CivilTakeoff currently measures areas, lengths, and counts from plan sheets and aerial imagery. It does not compare ground surfaces to calculate cut and fill.
- What happens when I hit the free limits?
- At 10 non-deleted projects, you cannot create another project. Uploads are blocked when they would exceed 5 GB of plan storage. Existing data is not deleted. Delete unneeded projects or files to free capacity, or upgrade to Pro. Archiving a project does not free a project slot.
- How can I compare it with my current tool?
- Measure the same sheet in both tools, using the same scale, boundaries, and units. Compare the measurements, pay-item totals, export, and time spent reviewing the results. The comparison pages explain the main workflow differences.
