How the calculation works
Add exposed height to buried height, converting inches to feet. Divide by block face height and round up to a whole course. Divide wall length by block face width to estimate blocks per course. Multiply by courses, round the base total up, apply the allowance, and round up again.
For a 60-foot-long wall with 4 feet exposed and 8 inches buried, 18-inch-wide by 8-inch-high blocks give seven courses and 40 blocks per course. That is 280 blocks before allowance, or 294 with an example 5% allowance.
The displayed blocks-per-course value can be fractional. It represents an equivalent length, not a final cutting or bond layout. The total rounds at the combined quantity level, so check each course and any cuts when preparing an order.
Calculate stepped sections separately when the required number of courses changes. Caps, corners, special units, geogrid, drainage stone, leveling pads, and reinforcement are separate. This count does not determine wall embedment, allowable height, or structural requirements.

Frequently asked questions
Does the buried course count?
Yes. The entered buried height is added to the exposed height before the number of courses is calculated.
Are caps included?
No. Count cap units separately using their own dimensions and the wall layout.
Why is blocks per course a decimal?
It is wall length divided by block width. The calculator rounds the combined count; check individual courses, cuts, and bond layout separately.
Does it tell me how deep to bury the wall?
