How the calculation works

The full zone height is bedding below the pipe plus outside diameter plus cover above the crown. Convert those inch values to feet, then multiply by trench width and run length. Deduct π × (outside diameter ÷ 2)² × length to find material volume. Divide by 27 for cubic yards.

For a 24-inch outside-diameter pipe in a 4-foot trench, with 6 inches below and 12 inches above, the gross zone is 14 square feet per foot of run. Subtracting the pipe gives about 10.86 square feet. Over 10 feet, that is approximately 4.02 cubic yards before allowance.

Zero cover does not mean bedding below the barrel only. It sets the top of the zone at the pipe crown, so material beside and beneath the pipe remains included. For the rectangular bedding layer below the barrel alone, calculate width × length × bedding depth separately.

The zone and pipe displacement results are before allowance; material volume and weight include it. Dimensions and permitted material come from the applicable trench detail. The constant-section model does not separately account for bell holes, multiple pipes, or changing trench geometry.

Frequently asked questions

Is material beside the pipe included?

Yes. The model includes the full rectangular zone outside the pipe, including the space beside the pipe and under its lower sides.

What happens if I enter zero above the pipe?

The zone ends at the crown. Material alongside the pipe is still included; this is not a below-barrel-only calculation.

Which pipe diameter should I use?

Use outside diameter from the pipe data, not nominal inside diameter. The calculator deducts a cylinder of that diameter.

How do I avoid double-counting general backfill?

Use this result for the embedment zone. For fill above it, calculate only the depth from the zone’s top to the next material boundary and use zero pipe diameter in the trench backfill calculator.
