Sitework takeoff measures demolition, paving, utility, concrete, and erosion-control quantities from a plan set. CivilTakeoff lets you measure areas, lengths, and counts in your browser, attach pay items, and export totals to Excel. Keep each scope and material type separate so the quantities match the project’s bid schedule.
Demolition and clearing
Measure pavement removal by area and type, sawcuts and curb removal by length, and structure removals by count. Use the demolition limits and notes to decide what is included. Aerial measurements can help prepare preliminary quantities, but visible features do not establish the removal scope.
Paving and concrete
Separate pavement sections before calculating surface area, asphalt tons, or base volume. For curb, sidewalk, and pads, use the dimensions in the applicable detail. Square feet (SF), square yards (SY), and cubic yards (CY) describe different quantities; use the required unit for each item.
Underground utilities
Measure pipe runs by system, diameter, and material, then count structures by type. Use the profiles and trench details to identify depth classes and bedding or backfill requirements. Plan-view length alone does not supply those dimensions.
Erosion and sediment control
Measure perimeter controls by length, inlet protection by count, and stabilization by area. Review every construction phase and the sequence notes for devices installed, moved, or replaced. The bid item defines whether payment covers the initial installation, each installation, or another specified quantity.
Example: pavement removal to a pay item
For an example removal scope, a 90-foot by 40-foot pavement area contains a 30-foot by 10-foot patch marked to remain. Net removal is (90 × 40) − (30 × 10) = 3,300 SF. With payment in SY, 3,300 ÷ 9 = 366⅔ SY of pavement removal. Assign that quantity to the removal item. Measure sawcut boundaries separately in linear feet (LF); an area deduction does not establish the sawcut length.
Frequently asked questions
How do I split demolition from replacement quantities?
Use separate removal and installation groups even when their boundaries match. Removal limits, replacement thicknesses, and payment units describe different work; attach each group to its own bid item.
Can one site area supply both SY and CY?
Yes. Divide square feet by 9 for surface SY. Multiply square feet by the entered layer depth in feet, then divide by 27 for CY. Keep each material layer separate.
What does the site plan leave out of the takeoff?
Plan geometry supplies horizontal areas and lengths. Pavement sections, utility profiles, and sequence notes supply layer depths, vertical information, and repeated installations needed to finish the quantity list.
