Landscape Takeoff
Landscape takeoff measures planting counts, bed areas, soil volumes, irrigation runs, fencing, and related site items. CivilTakeoff provides manual counts, area measurements, and length measurements with pay items attached. Read the landscape plans, schedules, and general notes together to assign the specified size, depth, and unit to each quantity.
Planting and mulch
Count plant symbols manually by species and size, then compare the totals with the plant schedule. Separate tree sizes and shrub container sizes where the bid requires them. Measure planting beds in square feet (SF) and use the specified mulch depth to calculate volume.
Topsoil and seeding
Measure the limits where topsoil and seeding are required, including disturbed areas identified in the general notes. Use area times specified topsoil depth for cubic yards (CY). Keep temporary seeding, permanent seeding, and different seed mixes separate when they are distinct items.
Irrigation
Measure mainline, laterals, and sleeves by size and material. Count heads, valves, controllers, and connections by type. Coordinate sleeve quantities with the paving or utility takeoff so they appear once in the final list, with responsibility recorded if the work is split between trades.
Fencing and guardrail
Measure fence by type and height, then count gates by width and type. Keep guardrail runs, end treatments, and transitions separate according to the bid schedule. Include runs and end treatments shown on roadway sheets as well as the landscape sheets.
Example: planting bed to mulch volume
For an example quantity conversion, a planting bed measures 2,160 SF after deducting paving. At an entered mulch depth of 3 inches, volume is 2,160 × (3 ÷ 12) = 540 cubic feet, then 540 ÷ 27 = 20 CY. Assign 20 CY to the mulch item before any allowance. Keep plant counts and bed edging in their own items. The depth illustrates the conversion; use the project detail for the actual takeoff.

Count symbols manually by species and specified size, then reconcile them with the schedule. Resolve discrepancies through the project’s clarification process before assigning a final quantity to each plant item.
Does a bed outline give mulch and topsoil volumes?
The outline gives SF. Each material needs its own depth from the details. Use separate boundaries where topsoil extends beyond the mulch limits or excludes existing planting.
How do I split irrigation runs and accessories?
Measure pipe in linear feet (LF) by size, material, and mainline or lateral service. Count heads, valves, and controllers as each (EA), keeping sleeves separate for coordination with pavement work.
