A LandXML file is an XML-based exchange file for civil engineering and survey data, including surfaces, alignments, points, and parcels. The contents depend on what was exported. Choose a receiving application that supports the exported objects, units, and coordinate reference.
What a LandXML export can carry
LandXML stores civil data as structured text. A surface export may contain points and triangle faces; other exports can include alignments, profiles, or parcels. The filename does not tell you which objects were included or whether the surface represents existing or proposed conditions.
LandXML exchanges selected entities and properties between applications; it does not copy the entire design project.
How to review an imported surface
Confirm the units and coordinate reference with the sender and the import settings in the receiving tool. Autodesk Civil 3D, for example, has LandXML settings for conversion, coordinate translation, and rotation.
Compare the imported surface with the issued design: location, elevations, extent, and boundaries. If it differs, check the exported objects and settings with the sender before using it for quantities.
Request and check a surface export

Request named existing and proposed surfaces separately when both are needed. Include the required revision and intended use.

Ask for horizontal and vertical units and the coordinate reference, including any local datum or transformation.

Check the receiving application’s LandXML support and import settings before opening the file.
