How the calculation works

First calculate outside diameter: inside diameter plus twice the wall thickness, with wall thickness converted to feet. Pit diameter is outside diameter plus twice the working clearance. Excavation volume is π × (pit diameter ÷ 2)² × depth ÷ 27 in cubic yards.

Structure displacement uses the same cylinder formula with outside diameter. Subtract that displacement from the unadjusted excavation to get surrounding backfill. Inside volume uses inside diameter and is reported in cubic feet; it assumes an unobstructed cylinder over the entered depth.

For a 4-foot inside diameter, 6-inch walls, 8-foot depth, and 1.5-foot clearance, outside diameter is 5 feet and pit diameter is 8 feet. Before allowance, excavation is 14.89 cubic yards, displacement is 5.82, and backfill is 9.08.

The allowance is applied separately to excavation and net backfill. Displacement and inside volume are unchanged, so subtracting the displayed displacement from excavation with allowance will not reproduce backfill with allowance. This model is a quantity calculation, not an excavation-support design or a complete precast structure model.

Frequently asked questions

How is excavation volume calculated?

In cubic feet, π × (pit diameter ÷ 2)² × depth. Divide by 27 for cubic yards. Pit diameter includes the structure’s outside diameter and working clearance on both sides.

Does structure displacement mean concrete volume?

No. It is the entire exterior cylinder, including the hollow interior. That is the space unavailable for surrounding backfill.

Does it include the base slab and cone?

No. The model uses a constant-diameter cylinder. Calculate different sections and excavation below the entered depth separately.

Why don’t the displayed volumes subtract after adding allowance?

Excavation and net backfill each receive the percentage separately; displacement does not. Set allowance to zero to compare the unadjusted geometry.
