Formula: tons = length ft × width ft × (depth in ÷ 12) × 135 lb/ft³ ÷ 2,000 lb, then + waste %

How the calculation works

Multiply length and width by depth converted from inches to feet. Divide the resulting cubic feet by 27 for cubic yards, or multiply by 135 and divide by 2,000 for short tons. Only the tonnage includes the entered allowance.

A 100-foot by 12-foot base at 6 inches compacted depth contains 600 cubic feet, or 22.22 cubic yards. At the density used here, that is 40.5 tons before allowance.

Use the total compacted thickness required by the section. If it is placed in multiple lifts, do not multiply the full-depth quantity by the number of lifts. Calculate separately when material type, width, or total thickness changes.

Crusher run is a supplier term, and the specified gradation may differ between projects. The generic density is not a DOT product certification. Confirm the material designation and density with the specification and supplier; use a separate calculation if a different density applies.
