Vector PDF Files, Explained

A vector PDF stores drawing paths as geometry, allowing linework to stay sharp when enlarged. It can also contain text and raster images. For takeoff, the relevant question is whether the region you want to measure contains geometry the tool can use, and whether the sheet scale is correct.

What the file contains

Vector content includes paths, curves, and fills. Raster content is a grid of pixels, such as a scanned drawing or aerial image. A PDF can combine both on the same page, so one sheet may support different measurement methods in different regions.

Selectable text does not prove the linework is vector. OCR can add searchable text to a scan, while some vector exports draw lettering as outlines. File size alone is also not a reliable test.

How to obtain a useful plan PDF

Ask the issuer for the original PDF export of the current drawing revision. A PDF exported from a design application can preserve vector paths, but its contents depend on export settings and embedded images.

Check the sheet before measuring

  1. 1

Zoom into several parts of the linework you intend to measure and look for visible pixels.

  2. 2

Inspect drawing paths separately from text, raster backgrounds, and scanned details. Selectable text alone does not establish vector linework.

  3. 3

Confirm the issued revision and calibrate the sheet against a known dimension. Verify another dimension before measuring.

  4. 4

For automatic area pickup, inspect the selected boundary and cutouts. Edit the result or measure manually when it does not match the scope.

Using this file with CivilTakeoff

CivilTakeoff creates editable areas from supported vector PDF regions and supports manual measurement on calibrated scans.

Frequently asked questions

Does OCR turn a scan into vector linework?

No. OCR recognizes text. It does not restore the original drawing paths used by CivilTakeoff’s automatic area pickup.

Can a CAD-exported PDF contain images?

Yes. Raster backgrounds and scanned references can remain images inside a PDF that also contains vector paths.

Will every vector region support automatic pickup?

No. The exported geometry and the intended boundary affect selection. Adjust the boundary or measure manually when it does not match the work.
